Shakespearean Web Quest Phase 2

de Vere :

1. many authorities ave made claims that de vere more than anyone is most closely related to being the author of the Shakespearean collection. Why?

It is said to be that De Vere kept his name secret because his family was nobility, and it would disgrace them to be a writer or actor. His plays are about court life, and Shakespeare had no access to court, but De Vere did because his family was noble. And he also wrote sonnets which are depicted by an older author when De Vere was 67 and Shakespeare was only 26.

2. what are some of the coincidental connections between the earl of oxford and Shakespeare? Are these connections strong enough to support oxfordian claims?

De Vere and Shakespeare both lived in the same time (1500’s). They both lived in Elizabeth’s court and knew the queen. De Vere is credited with writing some of Shakespeare’s work. They both have about the same writing style too.

3. What problems exist between the authorship of the Shakespearean poems and plays?

De Vere died before all the plays were written. So He couldn’t have possibly written the last ones.

4. what similarities exist between De Vere’s writing and Shakespeare’s writing? (consider style and structure)

They both use Iambic Pentameters.

5. what type of logic/illogic is used to support the oxfordian claims?

The character Hamlet is almost identical to de Vere’s life. Many would say that de Vere wrote Hamlet as an autobiography.

Marlowe Wrote Shakespeare

1. What association to Shakespeare is presented by the Marlowe Society that leads one to believe that Christopher Marlowe's death is associated with Shakespeare's writings?

The association to Shakespeare’s writings and Marlowe’s death is that Shakespeare alludes to Marlowe’s death by writing about it multiple times in his poems. Shakespeare's contemporary, the poet and dramatist Christopher Marlowe, was killed in a tavern brawl on May 30, 1593. Allusions to Marlowe's work are prevalent in Shakespeare's plays, and in the above passage we see the Bard quoting directly a line from Marlowe's Hero and Leander: 'Whoever lov'd that lov'd not at first sight?

2. What role did the British government play in Marlowe's death?

The British Government probably played a role because they made Marlowe pause from his writing and work under cover for them, and the things he could of been doing somehow might of turned out lethal.

3. Was Marlowe really a heretic?

Heretic, homosexual, and playwright these are all things that Marlowe might have been. Was he any of them? The only thing we are sure about is that we know that he was a playwright, but other than that there is no real truth to anything else.

4. What similarities exist between Marlowe's writing and Shakespeare's writing?

The similarities are both of them writing about death and how they wrote about the same things a lot of the time, but we think that they might of stolen each others writings or ideas.

5. What type of logic/illogic is used to support these claims?

The logic to support these claims is that the way that both of these people wrote about Marlowe’s death actually happened later in life. The illogical part is that we are calling Shakespeare a liar when he probably wrote what he says he wrote.

WHO WROTE SHAKESPEARE?

1. Find other candidates not already discovered in the background section and list why they should be considered as contenders.

· Ben Johnson- he has been suggested but there is no real evidence of him writing Shakespeare because he was known as the rival of William Shakespeare.

· Thomas Middleton- he was the co-writer of William Shakespeare, so he could have written the Shakespeare plays.

· Sir Walter Raleigh- there has been no real evidence of him writing Shakespeare but he is considered a candidate.

· Queen Elizabeth- she was the biggest supporter of Shakespeare so people believe that she could have been the writer of it.

2. What is the controversy that surrounds Shakespeare's bust and its inscription as it applies to Sir Francis Bacon?
Sir Francis Bacon had writing techniques and styles almost if not identical to Shakespeare. Because of this, the inscription on the bust could very well be written about Bacon but be talking directly about “the writer Shakespeare.” It does talk about Shakespeare but since many believe Bacon was Shakespeare, they believe the inscription is also talking about Bacon.

3. What did Mark Twain have to say about the debate issue?
Mark Twain believes that there is no hard evidence that William Shakespeare wrote his own plays, he said “So far as anybody actually knows and can prove, Shakespeare of Stratford-on-Avon never wrote a play in his life." He says that it is a little odd that out of all the hundreds of famous english, Scotish, and Ireshman only one doesn’t have any records or proof of what they did, and that would be shakspeare. Twain thinks that the writer Shakespeare was not the Actor William shakespeare.

4. Why should the Marlowe spy theory be reviewed?
The theory should be reviewed because there is no hard evidence that he did fake his burial and live past 1593. Also no fewer than sixteen jurors accepted it as a genuine. Another reason it should be reviewed is because the styles and ideas on life between Shakespeare and Marlowe are completely different, so many scholars have come to the conclusion that Marlowe could not have been the real Shakespeare.
5. How has technology, most notably the computer, made its presence known in this controversy?

The computer has been able to give people easier ways to access the information needed to support their claims for the person they might think is the real Shakespeare. The computers are able to provide information to everyone faster and more effectively. Technology has also given people the opportunity to share all their opinions and ideas of the controversy easily. The only problem with the new technology is that false facts can be distributed much easier giving people the wrong theories and ideas about who is the real Shakespeare.

6. What type of logic/illogic is used to support these claims?

Mark Twain did have a point in saying that there is no way that William Shakespeare the actor wrote the plays. He made his point by mentioning how out of all the hundreds of famous writers in that time William Shakespeare is the only one that doesn’t have detailed information on his life and accomplishments. It is also a good point made by many scholars that Marlowe couldn’t have written the plays and that he also couldn’t have faked his own death. Like mentioned before he couldn’t have faked his own death because there were witnesses of the death and there is also no evidence at all of his existence after he died. He couldn’t have written Shakespeare because he was apparently dead and also because his writing and ideas on life were completely different from Shakespeare’s.

SHAKESPEARE WROTE SHAKESPEARE

1. How is the spelling and pronunciation of Shakespeare's name important to investigate?

The man from Stratford was actually "William Shaksper" (or "Shakspere"), The man whose name was spelled and pronounced differently from that of the great poet "William Shakespeare," and that nobody at the time would have thought to confuse the two. But also people back in the 1600’s miss spelled things and nobody thought anything of it.

2. What are the Oxfordian claims that Shakespeare is responsible for everything he produced? Can these claims be refuted?

There are abundant amounts of evidence that testify to the fact that William Shakespeare of Stratford wrote the works published under his name, and this evidence is as extensive and direct as the evidence for virtually any of Shakespeare's contemporaries. Yes these claims can be refuted but these facts are so plausible why would you even think about another person wrote Shakespeare but Shakespeare

3. Why is it important to preserve the authorship status of William Shakespeare?

It is important to preserve the authorship status of William Shakespeare because that is one of the most important pieces of evidence that we have to prove that Shakespeare actually wrote the plays and sonnets that people claim he wrote.

4. What is the most convincing evidence that leads us to believe that Shakespeare, did in fact, write Shakespeare?

The most convincing evidence that we have to support the fact that William Shakespeare did in fact write all of his plays and sonnets is that the records show his name on the play and shows that he was an actor before he became a writer.

5. What type of logic/illogic is used to support the claims you investigated?
Basically this whole argument that Shakespeare didn’t write his plays and sonnets is an argument from ignorance. Because there is not enough evidence to prove that he didn’t write it they are trying to say that other writers wrote his famous writings.
